About

The Gwangju Chungjang Festival of Memories is the largest and most representative festival in the Gwangju-Jeonnam Unified Special City, originating on “Chungjang-ro” in Dong-gu, Gwangju, Jeonnam—the city’s premier commercial district. This festival holds special significance as “Korea’s first memory-themed festival,” bridging generations and social classes through the universal theme of “memories.” It creates a space for “memory-making” where people of diverse ages and backgrounds come together as one to share the cherished memories they all hold dear and create new ones. In particular, as the festival unfolds around Geumnam-ro and the May 18 Democracy Plaza—sites of profound significance in the history of global democracy—it embodies historical and cultural value that transcends that of a mere local festival. As a festival held in a sacred site of democratization, it carries symbolic significance, demonstrating citizens’ resolve to move beyond the pains of the past toward a hopeful future. Recognized externally for its excellence, the Chungjang Festival was first designated as an Honorary Culture and Tourism Festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024. It was subsequently re-designated for 2026–2027, maintaining its status as an Honorary Culture and Tourism Festival for four consecutive years (2024–2027) . Furthermore, it won the “Grand Prize in the Global Premium Category” at the 2026 Korea Festival Content Awards, marking the 10th consecutive year that the Gwangju Chungjang Festival of Memories has claimed the top prize and once again proving its status as a global premium festival representing South Korea. Looking ahead, the festival has grand aspirations to evolve into an international event that encompasses the culture and memories of all of Asia—beyond the local region—through collaboration with the Asia Culture Center. It plays a vital role in elevating Gwangju’s status as a cultural hub of Asia while providing a platform for communication and harmony through culture.
