About
Now in its first year, the “2026 Coal Mine Culture Festival” is a multifaceted cultural festival being held in the Sabuk-eup area of Jeongseon County, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, to commemorate the opening of the M650 Museum. The festival showcases the lives of the miners who drove South Korea’s industrialization and the history of coal mining through contemporary cultural and artistic programs. The event’s main components include a large-scale main performance based on the miners’ stories and collaborative programs involving seven cities and counties in regions undergoing coal industry transition. In addition, audience-participatory experiential programs that allow visitors to engage with the history of coal mining will be offered. The festival grounds are centered around the newly opened M650 Museum, the Ppuri Hall, and the 650 Street area, with various performances and cultural events tailored to the environment of each zone. The event transforms the historical background of the Sabuk region into cultural content and presents it to visitors.
