About
E The Dance of RevolutionE boldly breaks away from the conventional narrative structure of traditional theater and is composed of eight independent scenes. Each scene illuminates fragmentary moments one might encounter in the midst of a revolution, yet they are not bound by causal relationships. However, the relentlessly repeated dialogue, sounds, props, and lighting on stage, along with the actors’ intricate movements, bring the work’s inner structure to the surface. Through these repetitive patterns, the audience senses that the scenes are organically connected on a level beyond the narrative, encountering a new experience that expands the horizons of theater.
Program
〈2026 QUAD, Questions of Theater: Evolving Texts〉 This project focuses on the “text”—the very essence of theater—and explores the present and future of contemporary theater through the power of plays, which are constantly reinterpreted across generations. From William Shakespeare to modern plays and contemporary Korean theatrical texts, these five works will be reimagined by five master directors—Kim A-ra, Kim Gwang-bo, Kim Woo-ok, Lee Seong-yeol, and Han Tae-sook—who led the golden age of Korean theater. 〈The Dance of Revolution〉 This experimental spirit—which has consistently sought to break free from the confines of traditional theater to explore new forms—is deeply rooted in the historical context in which the play was created. Premiered in New York’s SoHo in 1976, it was one of the many experimental plays being actively staged at the time. These low-budget experimental productions used inexpensive spaces as stages instead of traditional, expensive venues, which led to the emergence of today’s black-box theaters. And in 2026—exactly 50 years later—*The Dance of Revolution* will be performed at the Daehak-ro Theater Quad, Seoul’s most spectacular black-box theater. Will the desperate experimental spirit of 50 years ago still be alive in this production?
