About
"Dalseong 100 Pianos" has established itself as a cultural icon representing the region and as a one-of-a-kind event in the country. "Dalseong 100 Pianos" is Korea’s premier piano music festival, held at Samunjin Ferry Landing in Dalseong County, Daegu—the historic site where the first piano was brought to Korea. In March 1900, the piano brought to Samunjin by American missionary Sidebottom was such an unfamiliar Western instrument that the local residents at the time called it the “ghost’s instrument.” However, the history of music that began with a single piano has, over the course of more than 100 years, evolved into a magnificent performance featuring 100 pianos playing in unison. The festival, which began in 2012 as “Welcoming a Century” in Dalseong, became “Celebrating a Century” in 2013. To this day, it encompasses a wide range of genres—from classical to jazz, pop, and popular music—delivering new musical experiences every year. In particular, the performances set against the backdrop of the beautiful Nakdong River and the historic scenery of Samunjin offer a unique experience where music, nature, and history come together. The Dalseong 100 Pianos festival carries the history of Korean music—which began with a single piano—into the present day, transforming Samunjin into a unique musical space where culture and art thrive.
