About
Legend has it that Samrangseong Fortress, which surrounds Jeondeungsa Temple, was built by Dangun’s three sons to ward off foreign invaders. It is also the site where, after the Goryeo Dynasty relocated to Ganghwa Island to escape the Mongol invasion, the royal court held a 120-day “Great Buddha Noon Dharma Assembly” at the Samrangseong Palace, fueling their resolve to resist the Mongols. Furthermore, it served as the repository for the *Annals of the Joseon Dynasty* for 250 years and is the site of the victory in the *Byeongin Yangyo*, where French forces were repelled. It is also the site of a week-long victory in the Righteous Army battles against Japanese imperialism during the late Joseon period. It is a site of national pride that has continuously interacted with our history over 5,000 years and embodies that history. To foster pride in our glorious history and promote it widely, the Samrangseong History and Culture Festival is held annually starting on the first Saturday of October; this year marks its 26th edition.
